Last weekend I re-attended the facilitator training for the Writers Collective of Canada. We wrote together several times throughout the day, following the architecture of the expressive writing workshop process. What I love most about the WCC writing workshops is the brave space for self expression.
When this prompt was offered I had a full body sensory experience and I endeavoured to capture it in words as best as I could.
I’m fascinated that the thoughts and sensations are eloquent and fully formed in my mind, but writing them down sometimes feels crunchy. For some reason the corresponding words don’t always feel as fluid and elegant.
Prompt: Letting go feels like
I'm on the edge of a cliff, my breath catches in my chest, not quite reaching the depths of my lungs. It's as though I'm about to dive head first into cold water, and I am not a strong swimmer. I take the steps and still hold on, wishing I didn't have to. I don't like this. I don't want to. But I leap and I soar.
I have begun practicing writing descriptions of my sensory experiences and emotions to improve capturing them in words. It does become easier the more I do it.
Do you practice specific types of writing? Or is there an aspect of your writing you’re currently working to improve?
